Hitachi DH40MR, Hunky Hammer!

Hunky Hammer!

Previous to purchasing this drill, I had been using a friends Bosch 11236 SDS hammer drill. I found myself needing to borrow it with increasing frequency and decided it was time to get one.

After evaluating reviews and my budget, I decided on the DH40MR. This drill is a SDS MAX and cannot be fairly compared to my friends Bosch 11236 SDS, but the price difference when shopping was only about 15%. The difference in performance however was phenomenal, after using the DH40MR it’s difficult to consider the Bosch 11236 as much of a hammer drill.

The drill is very, very powerful and I have learned the hard way to brace myself while drilling. The chipper and/or hammer works extremely well and can crack 4″ 2500 PSI concrete in seconds. One draw-back I have found is the drill bit and/or chisel can get stuck and this drill has NO reverse. The bit or chisel must be broken loose.

Initially I didn’t realize the SDS MAX was not compatible for the SDS bits, and all the SDS bits previously purchased would not fit. Later I found a SDS MAX to SDS adapter and can now use SDS and SDS MAX.

The DH40MR also gives me the capacity to drill larger holes. 1-1/2″ drill bit and 4″ core bit. Vibration is low considering the power output. Rather heavy to lug around but the weight comes in handy when drilling or hammering. There is NO “drill only” feature on this drill, but haven’t had a “drill only” application.

This drill is not cheap and good bits are expensive, but it can save lots of time…

competent
I used this to drill 3.5-inch holes in a cinder block wall,
using a Milwaukee LHS core bit. The DH40MR is completely overkill for such an application, giving absolutely no indication of strain and getting barely warm.

Great Tool
This is my second of this same model. I would not buy something different for mid-size application. Can handle the big jobs, but I did not use it very often. Compact design allows me to use the tool where the greatest tools are bulky hard to use. IE under floors in crawlspaces, etc. Highly recommedn this tool for the general contractor.
