Versatile, Outstanding quality and sound for the price
I’d used a few pairs of the Philips SHE5910 over the years and found them reliable and quite comfortable. With this product being the presumed successor, I was immediately curious. At its selling price I had no qualms with ordering a pair, and my expectations were met quite well. These are outstanding earphones that most audiophiles should be more than satisfied with and are a product that dealt with the criticisms of its other products to make something better than the sum of its parts.
The buds themselves have pretty much anything you could ask for– their size lets them fit almost entirely in the ear, three different comfort cap sizes are given (allowing you hours of comfortable use), and the cord is a tidy length by default but has an 18″ extension that makes it a good length for use at a desktop computer or iPod. One substantial criticism of previous models and the Philips line in general has been the sour quality of bass, and that’s been addressed by a design they call “turbo bass”. Generic term yes, but sounds under 100Hz or so really pop out and long extended bass hits play through like you’d see in a good car stereo. I found it good enough that I didn’t need to adjust any equalizer settings in the low range, which is rare.
Midrange seems to be where the bass quality was stolen from, and a lot of vocals or mild percussion can sting at times. There is an easy fix that I noted quickly… turn down the 3k-6kHz down 5db or so in your equalizer settings (if available) and piercing almost completely disappears. This is the only real flaw that I’d warn people serious about the quality of if you cannot adjust your settings… though this is available on all modern iPods and in PC mp3 software. To top it off, treble and high-end frequencies sparkle nicely.
Really a fantastic value and a distinct advantage on the “entry-level” models from most brands which can be more expensive.
